5 String Fretless Schecter bass problems?

I just bought a Schecter Diamond Series 5 string fretless bass and on the 1st 2 or 3 frets (or where they would be) it sounds as if the notes are muted. This effect worsen when i tune the bass down to low A on the B string or drop D in the E string. Anyone know why it's doing this????
